Ask the Rabbi: Kybalion

Question:

Dear Rabbi Weiman,

Is it possible to show a correspondence between Kabbalah and the Seven Hermetic Principles written in the Kybalion? If so, how?

The Principles of: Mentalism; Correspondence; Vibration; Polarity; Rhythm; Cause and Effect; & Gender I would appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Thank you.

Diana

Answer:

Dear Diana,

Yes many of the more esoteric philosophies in the world share common beliefs.

If you read through my ten introductory essays at www.kabbalahmadeeasy.com you will notice many correspondences between the seven Hermetic principles and the principles I discuss there. In Maimonides' mystical writings you will find (in a different language) the concepts of rhythm, vibration, and in his philosophical/mystical writings you can find mention of cause and effect.

Its not clear why the author of the Kybalion chose those seven principles or how he would define and explain them more clearly, but the basic ideas are certainly to be found in various forms throughout the mystical writings in Judaism.

Truth is something anyone G-d wants to reveal it to can grasp a hold of it. If Abraham and Hermes both had access to G-dly wisdom it only makes sense they would be in agreement on some of the deeper principles of life whether or not that ever actually met.

All the best,

Max
