Ask the Rabbi: Belief in the All Mighty

Printer friendly version

Question:

My boyfriend says that he don't believe in God. He thinks God is just a fairy tale. He asks me things like how do you know there is a God? How do I answer that question? Thanks.

Celeste

Answer:

Dear Celeste,

Wow that’s a deep question for email.

It’s good for you to think about it and it’s good for you both to talk about it.  I can’t give you a short answer to that question but I can give you some things to think about and discuss.

The simple answer is the universe implies a Creator.  Some people are hung up on the definition of God or whether or not He wants organized religion.  But at least one idea should be crystal clear: An Infinite Being created us and the world.

Where did the universe come from if not from an infinite Being?

Why do human beings have a sense of right and wrong if it wasn’t put into us by a God that wants us to choose to do the right thing?

Why does food taste and smell good, if not that God wants us to experience pleasure?

Why is there no atheist in a foxhole if not that we intuitively know there’s a God who could save us?

Why do the leaves grow on the trees when we need shade and fall off when we want the warmth of the sun?  (I could go on and on about the exactness and purposefulness inherent in creation.)

The odds of a universe so intricate, complex and beautifully organized happening by chance is ridiculous.
